TAJ-szám (Health Insurance Number)

The TAJ-szám (társadalombiztosítási azonosító jel) is the Hungarian social insurance identification number — equivalent to a social security number or national insurance number. It is required to access the Hungarian public healthcare system and various social services.

Who Needs It

The TAJ-szám is relevant if you:

  • Plan to live in Hungary and use the public healthcare system
  • Are employed in Hungary (required for payroll and contributions)
  • Need to access social services or public benefits in Hungary

If you are living abroad and not using Hungarian services, you do not need a TAJ-szám immediately.

How to Get It

The TAJ-szám is issued by the National Health Insurance Fund (Nemzeti Egészségbiztosítási Alapkezelő, NEAK).

Requirements:

  • Hungarian citizenship or residency
  • A registered Hungarian address (lakcímkártya — see Lakcímkártya)
  • Application in person at a NEAK office or through the relevant government window

The lakcímkártya is typically a prerequisite. Establish your address registration first, then apply for the TAJ-szám.

Healthcare Access

With a TAJ-szám and registered address, you are entitled to use the Hungarian public healthcare system. This includes:

  • GP (háziorvos) — primary care physician registration
  • Hospital care
  • Specialist referrals through the public system
  • Prescriptions at subsidized rates

Private healthcare is also available in Hungary and does not require a TAJ-szám.

For Families Moving to Hungary

For families relocating to Hungary, each family member needs their own TAJ-szám. Children who have acquired Hungarian citizenship and are moving to Hungary will need their own numbers registered separately.

The TAJ-szám is also required for school enrollment alongside the lakcímkártya, so obtaining it early is practical if you have school-age children.

Keeping It Safe

The TAJ-szám does not expire. Keep the card (or record the number) safely — it is needed for all interactions with the healthcare system and social services.
