Introduction

This knowledge base focuses on obtaining or confirming Hungarian citizenship by descent.

The project originated from personal experience with the simplified naturalization procedure. During the preparation process, it was necessary to independently review legal acts, document requirements, and practical nuances. Information was fragmented, many questions were repeated, and there was no clear structure.

Over time, the material was systematized and structured into this knowledge base.

Possible Paths

If there is a Hungarian ancestor in your family history, different legal scenarios may apply.

In some cases, simplified naturalization is the appropriate route — this is a procedure through which citizenship is granted based on descent.

In other cases, verification applies — this is not about acquiring citizenship, but confirming that citizenship may already exist and has been transmitted through the family line.

In certain situations, analysis may show that there is no legal basis for either procedure.

Determining the correct path is the first step in the process.

What the Information Is Based On

The information is based on two categories of sources.

The foundation consists of the provisions of the Fundamental Law of Hungary, the Act LV of 1993 on Hungarian Citizenship, and the Government Decree No. 125/1993 (IX.22.) Korm.

These acts regulate the grounds for acquiring citizenship, the application procedure, and the competence of the authorities.

Consolidated Practice

The knowledge base also incorporates anonymized and aggregated data from publicly available cases and recurring practical situations.

Each article clearly distinguishes between:

  • what follows directly from the law;
  • what relates to administrative practice.

If an area of uncertainty exists, it is explicitly noted.

Disclaimer

The information is maintained with the aim of being accurate and up to date; however, errors or legislative changes may occur.

The service and materials are provided “as is.”

Important circumstances should be independently verified before submitting an application.

This knowledge base helps to understand the structure of the process and prepare accordingly, but it does not replace individual legal advice.

Additional Resources

The knowledge base includes:

  • structured requirement lists;
  • document templates;
  • information about consulates;
  • procedural explanations;
  • access to an AI assistant.

The AI assistant operates based on legal acts and consolidated data from publicly available sources. It helps users navigate requirements and procedural logic but does not make decisions on behalf of state authorities.

Interesting fact

In some cases, the procedure takes around 9 months (based on aggregated observations from publicly available cases). The actual duration depends on the place of submission and the specifics of the case.

If the appropriate route has not yet been determined, it is logical to begin with the article “Which Path to Choose.”
