Hungarian Birth Certificate
After the oath of citizenship, the Hungarian civil registry eventually issues a Hungarian birth certificate (anyakönyvi kivonat) documenting the naturalization. This is the document most new citizens wait for the longest — and the one that causes the most frustration in the post-oath period.
What It Is
The Hungarian birth certificate is an official civil registry document. For those naturalized abroad (rather than born in Hungary), it documents the recognition of citizenship and is the foundational document for subsequent Hungarian records.
How Long Does It Take
Community experience is consistent: the wait is long and unpredictable.
- Typical range: 1 to 12+ months after the oath
- Median: roughly 6–9 months based on community reports
- Outliers: cases of over a year are documented
There is no reliable way to predict your individual timeline. The processing is done centrally in Hungary and is not significantly influenced by which consulate handled your application.
What to Do While Waiting
The most important thing to know: you do not need the birth certificate before you can take other steps.
- You can apply for a Hungarian passport without the birth certificate — confirm the current procedure with your consulate
- You can obtain a lakcímkártya without the birth certificate (see Lakcímkártya)
Do not put your life on hold waiting for the certificate to arrive before doing anything else.
Checking Status
There is no standard online tracking system for the birth certificate. Options:
- Contact the consulate that handled your application and ask them to check status
- Contact the Hungarian civil registry directly (Belügyminisztérium anyakönyvi főosztály)
Responses are not guaranteed to be fast, but asking does sometimes accelerate the process.
If It Has Been Over a Year
If more than 12 months have passed without the certificate arriving, escalate through the consulate. Community experience suggests that active inquiry at this stage is more likely to produce results than continued waiting.
When It Arrives
The birth certificate is sent to the address on file with the consulate. Make sure your address is current. Some consulates hold the certificate for pickup rather than mailing it internationally — confirm the delivery method when you submit your application.
Once received, keep the original safe. It is a foundational document for all subsequent Hungarian records.
